Two woman, Anita Holzberg and Ann Wainwright met over the internet with Bill Costley,
their common friend, whose wife Carolin had been Ann's good friend. Starting in
June '09, Anita sent a Cupcake poem to Ann's website cakecakecake, after seeing
the photo of cupcakes. The poem was about her grandson's first birthday party. Ann
liked that and it was the start of a wonderful exchange of poems from Anita to Ann and
Ann with color, photos, and lay-out savvy, presented them to the blog. Now, in 2010,
the two women so alike in spirit and interests, have started BetweenFriends, a new blog
site where they can combine ideas about their worlds. Ann lives in Northern UK
(Teesside). Anita lives in Northern California, Sunnyvale, (Silicon Valley where all the
computers are.) We share our lives on this blog and hope you will comment and share
yours too, dear readers and enjoy the "ride".

I am returning to my regular life - Anita

The bloom is on the rose
Arriving

The first word out of my mouth is
Wonderful
Arriving
I open the door to my mind
And let the sunshine come in

Where I have been is over
Where I will go is coming into focus

The world waits for poly wogs
Wait for me.

Up Early - Anita Hozberg

Up early
  grey cloud cover
I won't let that take away my spirits
  or the caterpillars that creep
      or the balloon man
         high or deep

Up early
    a poem writes herself
the popcorn of the mind remembers
     old movies
     Mom and Dad
     the drugstore
     meatball sandwiches on Thursday
     Park Avenue
     William Carlos Williams
     My 2 wheeler
     My black and white house

Up early
too early to hear your voice
          but
      I hear it anyway

How are You?

Extraordinary Dream - Anita Holzberg

Extraordinary dreams
I hear the drummer
I see my whole world opening
like a roll
like a seed flowering

Extraordinary dreams
the coin is in the pond
the memory is written on the wind
the dream is on top of the mountain
the sky is so high, I can taste it

Extraordinary hearts
beating to the beat
In sync with the morning sunrise

I take this time
when my friends have been there
when my poet friends and I rejoice
It is Spring
The river is flowing
And the small child holds the dream.

Owen and Evie I send you kisses

Mammy

Up 4 AM - Anita

Up 4 AM or rather 4:30
The birds are sleeping and my heart
awake
I put away the cheese
I put away the wine from my wine and cheese
Picchu is sleeping too
Everyone is sleeping
The whole world is sleeping
and my beloved is sleeping too

Who says being awake is so great>
The G-ds have it
And the piccolo player sings.

Watch Out Clouds - Anita Holzberg

Watch out clouds
Bill's got a girl friend
Watch out clouds
Black birds dance
and the siren blows
Watch out heart
Hang it up to dry
You missed the beat
You missed the window
Just when my world is opening
   his is too

Watch out clouds
Cover your heads
No tears, now

Watch out
For life is just like that
Pervading sun
Then the clouds come
Watch out.

Day Breaks (For Bill) - Anita Holzberg

Day breaks
As I see your face this morning
A white wave
Sparkling
In the
morning dew.

Returning Health - Anita Holzberg

In truth, the rose is on the bloom
God rearranges life for me
My health is coming back
I walk mostly without the cane
I am a little fearful, but nevertheless
   I am doing it
Time comes about time is on my side
10 good years left or 20
But who is counting
Dear Ann
Write to you
It is almost noon
my daughter walks 6 miles
Her back healing and
the mother rejoices
like the rejoicing I do every day
about her health and mine returning.

New Beginnings - Anita Holzberg

The song of songs
  remembers the days of searching
loneliness
   peaceful mornings toughing it out
The psalm of psalms  remembers
the truths we said around an oak table
so many years ago

I touch a leaf
I am memorizing the rain
I am enchanted this opening April
With new friends
fabulous sunsets and
1,000 sunrises begin my day

I am enchanted this opening April.

Lightening strikes - Anita Holzberg

Lightening strikes but once
The bloom is on the rose
The incredible dream before me
I open the door
I am standing on the precipice
Night is coming into day
The world is sweeter
I will take that sweetness and follow her
Like the wind in early
April
Like the summer breezes and 80 degree weather
I will open my heart
And let the summer come in.

In the spirit of Now - Anita Holzberg

In the spirit of now
I write the lines that carry me to another place
In the spirit of now
I sing the songs that have to be sung
In the spirit
I walk with a new pair of shoes
In the spirit of now
I take my life and move it forward
Visiting friends I see universals
Visiting friends who open their hearts and home

In the spirit of Now
I see your face launch 1000 ships
Maybe I am dreaming
In the spirit of Now.

Anita Schiffman Holzberg

For Nathan - by Anita

For Nathan:

I never met your Mom, but I have
In the conversations with you, she bloomed

I never met your Mom
Fiercely Independent

A Mother of mothers
A rose in your garden
It will ever flower
Making you the wonderful person you are
Your heritage blossoms like her and your day
A man among men
The fighter, the kindness, the generosity of spirit
That all that you have now
And the generations that you nurture will
   Have this wonder, too

Dreams - Anita Holzberg

In the background of life
 there is this little light
pushing us forward toward the dream

I dream of sandy beaches
  trips to the country
a friend to hold me in the still summer night.

What do you dream about?

The Infinite Battle - Anita Holzberg

In the goings and comings
In the brink or on the brink
I fight my battles with a growing waistline
always and always
I've tried and been successful
Then, my world falls apart as the weight
follows me back

In this insane state of being
I buy more clothes
I feel less than
I wander who I am really

So goes the weight I walk better
So comes on the weight I walk not as good
Isn't that reason enough

The carrot is out there
Eating well, feeling well is out there
In that state of state
I can't even hear this

I get on the bike, my salavation
I walk into the pool
I eat less and juice more

I never ever give back
Even if the weight follows me back
I fight the battle and let the sleep come
over me like a cloud
I float in the meaning of Now
Now is the time to get the body back
Now is the time.

Life is about these Sparks! - Anita Hozlberg

A veggie omlette
        fixed to perfection
Roasted red potatoes
        I sat at a restaurant
So much like a cafe
        Sharing the chatter
and clanking of forks

I arrive home
after this meal
and find my neighbor
   to converse with
Reading is the topic

We always can communicate
We always can be friends

The April sun decides to come out
I shed a little light on a child that I see
  every week
Positive vibes this Spring Day
Worries aside
An instant message photo
Owen in an airplane
with a grin on his face
Life is about these sparks
It really is.

APRIL - Anita Holzberg

There is a hint of breeze
     a smidgin of cool
           the trees are blooming
                 the birds are singing
I can't help loving the sky
          can you?

Life as we Know It - Anita Holzberg

The April sun comes quietly
a dusting of flower blooms on my deck
The fountain turns over and I stand it up
   a Grecian urn not forgotten
The lattice lounge chair waiting for Picchu to return
I type these lines
as a I should be exercising
I press a button and get a nutritious drink
Its red, the color of strawberries
I think that nothing will take away this moment
     and for thee
         I wish you the same
So quietly the April sun shines

Truth Comes - Anita Holzberg

Truth comes
  fluttering through the trees
Truth waits for no one
a sneeze and she is there

Truth comes through the vines that flank my yard
Beyond the fountain that seeks water to flow

Truth is everywhere written on the flying bird
on the clouded sky on the rim of madness and
sadness

I wait for her
Do not utter a word

Until, the day is here
Lines of communication are open
Loud and clear
This is the first is many a year

Truth comes like a silk dancer
On the wind of memory and deed
Truth lies in the meadow of silence
Heed, Heed!

The Cheese Stands Alone - Anita x

I will sit again in the corner
 memorizing the wall
I will wait at noon time
  for your call
How many years the wallflower
The fly on the wall
How many years
  "the cheese stands alone"

Today, I own up to this
Today, I am stronger than that

I live  alone, dine alone, bath alone
say good night alone

I can say these words in sadness
I can cry over these words

But, alas, I do not
My best friend holds my truth
My best friend says goodnight
My best friend stands up to my sadness

I am not alone

I am not sad

And the cheese has more than one best friend.

I Open My Heart - Anita Holzberg

Cool winds blow
I awake at 5 to the sound of the wind
It is March
  The trees are blooming
  At 9
The sky will become clear
I will walk in full sun
Yesterday, so tired
I never did my exercise
Yet, 7 lbs. down

As the day unfolds
Picchu gobbles her new cat food
So much to her liking

I open my heart to the wind and shadow
Spring wakes
My vision is clear

Like Hemingway's Moveable Feast
I write a bit, stop, write again
save some for the next day
and begin again.

Spring POEM - ANITA HOLZBERG

In just spring
  when the world is puddle-luscious
          when the frog "rivet rivet"
and the sun stays in the sky seemingly
                                    forever
In just Spring
  when the spirits soar
and we fall in love once more
            with the season of romance
Reckless heads turn
  short shorts appear
    on long legs
capri for some of less fortunate
In just Spring
  when the puddles are lusious
when the bees return to the pollen
            when sneezing is beyond believing
when the sun bathing season begins
I sit here on a park bench
I watch the parade of people go by
Its Spring
  every bush is ringing
        every brook is bubbling
                every head a turning
Ah, Shakespeare wrote about this
      Milton and Yeats adorned this
the scriptures told about this too....
And You
What are you doing this Spring day
     Is your head turning too?

Words - ANITA Photo - ANN x

Did you ever wonder if a snowflake knows where it is landing?
Nature, we must honor her. While seeing the light between the trees,
a bird rustles by and I am startled and the deep blue sky.

Some Thoughts - Anita Holzberg

Some Thoughts: Dawn Song

I wait for the light
  Picchu hears my step
I drink my cinnamon hazel nut coffee
the week looms  l a r g e
nothing succeeds like success
I walk further each time
the feet can take it
I continue to continue

I visit Jim and laugh with him
He does not utter a word
Trapped in a hospital bed
He eats the chicken sandwich I brought
I show him the IPHONE he is fascinated
I talk about his Blackberry

I arrive home and take a walk
I speak to Isabelle
Her voice is strong and lively
I now wait for the light

I hold the reigns of the heart
I hold the heart close
As the day starts
The sun rises
It is a new day!

The Changing Light - Anita Holzberg

Arise at 7 AM, still dark
Went back to sleep til 8 AM
The light comes
Now streaming in my living room
It is 10, but really 9
Changing light
Chirping birds
The Spring begins
We lust for new blooms
new plants, barbecues and
outdoor swim
It is the beginning
Light bathes us
We are transformed with the new season.

MARCH - Anita Holzberg

March comes in like a lamb
  the rain almost non-existent
60 and 70 degrees
I put away my Winter coats
My geraniums bloom
Then, we have a day of raw weather
   I make my bean stew
I drink 3 cups of spiced tea
I wear a sweater and a coat
I listen to my daughter for
almost an hour
      Her voice makes my day
We are talking about serious subjects
I shop for my party for Rachel
Gouda and Edam cheese high on the list
It is March and the clouds have parted
This is good!

Winter Sun - Anita Holzberg

The winter sun comes early
    7 AM
        riding the tide
I open the sliding glass door
         look at my garden
Ready for pruning and new flowers
in 8 weeks it will be
       Spring
     and there is happiness in
          that thought
      there really is.

Later - Anita Holzberg

  Later the fates have it
Earlier my heart on a limb
My lover in a nursing home
My friend at the end of the phone line
Later I remember it all
Hugs into the night
Dinners and laughter
Now, I hold you in my memory
like silk.

Learning - Anita Holzberg

Learning is a curve
A step in the traffic of the mind
Little remarks in the face of doing
  something new
Focus and redoing
Until I begin to realize
how now
I am there!

Poem by Anita

Riding the tide
the river does not impede my tracks
Another year begins
  walking better
promises begin to be met
the bloom is on the rose
we welcome the dawn of a new year
in the wings of yesteryear
all systems, "Go."

Dawn song on my Birthday - Anita Holzberg

In the cool black
 I write my dawn song
   it is my birthday
       the day of my birth
I wait for the first light
  like so many other days
     I rise at 6 not 7
 and greet my cat
     who eats in the dark
" there is always darkness before the dawn"
     my Dad's saying
How I miss him this day
      How the years go by
And we scarcely believe we are older
            In that sliver of time
maybe less than a few minutes
             I wait for dawn
         with all her promise of
            a new day, new year
                rebirth!

Sunday Begins - Anita

Cool mornings
  brilliant sun
Picchu comes in for her breakfast
  eggs crack
     toast pops
marmalade sweet
      A peaceful Sunday begins.

Our Father - A Poem by Anita Holzberg

Our Father who art in heaven
  grant Peace in this planet
      green rolling hills
         sunsets to remember
            brilliant sun

       topping the list
            good friends and good health

May the word of G-d prevail
           bringing
                 Love and Happiness

With Love, one is adored and adoring
    With happiness, the spirit lightens
             and takes off.

Toasty shower poem - Anita Holzberg

In this cool February morning
  toasty shower
    warms up my bones
my skin glistens like hot oatmeal
     in a warm rainstorm
Oh, how comforting is that
     lotion comes on next
as I wrap my towel around me
    so pleased
      water again is my savior
as it always is
        fresh and scented
I emerge, I glow at the start of
        my day.

Acupuncture Adventure - Anita Holzberg

Listening to music
the needles in arm and leg and head
hold me
   as I float through time
I start my day there
hoping to relieve the anxiety and pain
I do not even think
   I am in the zone
I get up
   refreshed like after a swim
it lasts for a few days
            hours without speaking
I am OK, I am better
      The calmness does come
and the walking is better, too.
Peace follows.

One Day - Anita Holzberg

Skies hung over
  milder temps
stationary remembrances
I follow the rain
Buy some sweet grapes and
   and frozen Greek yogurt
I think my meals will be simple now
soup=yogurt=grapes
I wanted to buy more
but my feet gave out
and I was lucky to make it home.
