Two woman, Anita Holzberg and Ann Wainwright met over the internet with Bill Costley,
their common friend, whose wife Carolin had been Ann's good friend. Starting in
June '09, Anita sent a Cupcake poem to Ann's website cakecakecake, after seeing
the photo of cupcakes. The poem was about her grandson's first birthday party. Ann
liked that and it was the start of a wonderful exchange of poems from Anita to Ann and
Ann with color, photos, and lay-out savvy, presented them to the blog. Now, in 2010,
the two women so alike in spirit and interests, have started BetweenFriends, a new blog
site where they can combine ideas about their worlds. Ann lives in Northern UK
(Teesside). Anita lives in Northern California, Sunnyvale, (Silicon Valley where all the
computers are.) We share our lives on this blog and hope you will comment and share
yours too, dear readers and enjoy the "ride".

Memories of teaching in the summer - by Anita

In truth,
I can not remember anything
but their faces
lined up like soldiers
the summer I taught at Harker
the whirlwind of thoughts
the time spent preparing
Whish it is over
those years are over
my greatest years of teaching
learning from the kids too
A child from Hong Kong lead the way.

Jim's Awakening - by Anita Holzberg

Jim awoke
his humor returned
his brain moved forward
he followed the conversation and added to it

A miracle unfolding
the love of my life
returning
This is very good!
It is like a rainbow in the middle of
a storm.

A New Person in the Group - Anita Holzberg

How the dimension changes
comfortable conversation
poems flowing like whipped cream
on blueberries
I sat next to You
a person I have known for 5 or 6 years--a true friend
I sat across from Bill, my mentor, my friend
I sat across from Karl, whose poetry sang with the night
And Ginny raised the questions with her great poem

Rita watched with rapt attention
Her comments about herself
the amazing difficult life she had
told with verve and wit and humor

Isn't that what loving is all about?
Staying together for the long haul
Respecting artistic pursuits
Supporting the life that walks in
a room
This small group sustains that
I cherish it
I really do!

In Truth - by Anita Holzberg

In truth
the reciprocity of spirit comes
after great tragedy
after great soul searching
I move forward with open arms
to embrace the moment of my daughter's wedding
I listen to the the leaves
in truth they tell me how to act.

time moves so fast - Anita Holzberg

Time takes tomorrow
shapes her into a ball
the ball rolls so fast that tomorrow's are gone
fast it goes
5 weeks til the wedding
the ball is rolling
I am walking better
I will walk my daughter down the aisle
with her father
Time rolls so quickly
I can not miss every moment that crosses
my path
Roll with it!

poem by Anita

Walk now,
Speak
little children light the way
I meet a 5 year old
we talk a bit
write a bit
use a magic slate
I watch her
her mind clicking
we go over the new words
always that verve
somedays, when I feel I can not go on,
I go to the little people
watch teach them
shape them
this has been the silver lining
it has!

Bubbling Waters - Anita Holzberg

Bubbling waters
a face unmasked
a non-erasable bond
the space defined
I have typed you in
a reoccurring repertoire
A song that will never end
Transcendental meeting
Between one phone message
and another
Split second recall
Sits your smile
Illuminating my face.

Loving if I Can - Anita Holzberg

If I can
I would
I would go the distance
I have done that
I have walked in crystals
I have experienced your pain
I have run circles around hospital staffs
made friends at the nursing home
I have walked in crystals
til your pain was my pain
your disability my disability
I lost you down those mean streets
but you are never ever lost to me
I continue to go
walk in salt
rocks do not deter me
just to touch your arm
or see your face
I know you can not be my every day
my rock of Gibraltar
but what you said to me
how you believed in me
will never leave me
Jim
you will never leave me.
Your spirit stays as nothing else about
this situation makes sense
My liability, my loyalty gave me
strength and durability
to go the distance, to take flight, too.

Summertime at the Pool - Anita Holzberg

Watch the wind fluttering over the pool
I do my walks
the water flows between my toes
the sun touches my shoulders
I meet a woman in her 80's from Leeds
with her walker
she kicks and walks like me
her left leg not working
just like me
we walk past one another
and talk
It is noon time
the pool is quiet
She greets me every time
I will return
my body relaxed in
the ripple of the water
I go up the steps
the pavement hot
I take my cane
move forward
Life is about moving forward
Is it not?

For Emily & Jamie - Anita Holzberg

Softly, the cocoa moon
spreads over their shoulders
two beautiful people sharing family and friends
two beautiful people
in a beach setting
the sun, a diamond on their faces
two beautiful people
who have walked the right path
of giving and loving
the beach is their oyster
their devotion to family
their fresh faces
come together in the noon =day sun
overlooking the cliff
white gown rustles
blue shirts stand up
Owen and Skylar light the way
on this your wedding day.

poem by Anita

On this cool July morning
Waffles for breakfast
Tulips for lunch
Petunias for dinner
Round about the sounds of plums dropping
on my deck
A black cat, Picchu saunters in
What does she bring to the party?

A Poem for Lynn - Anita Holzberg

It was early evening
the sun was up in the air
the breezes came to my yard
so did my friend Lynn
her dogs-- wagging lively
the spirited dachshunds came too

We met over tragedy
and created a melody of friendship
deep remarks
scales of harmony
that lit the blue sky.

Looking Back.. - Anita Holzberg

In the rampant rivers
that we call home
In the scrapbooks and photo books
I find myself
the mirror of the mind comes back
my childhood
in a wool poncho
on the back porch
watering pansies
feeding a bunny
a pet turtle walks
rainy summer days
our tomato stand
I pick the roses today on my walk
it all comes back
hits me in the face
like a pine cone
that finds me
as quiet rain.

Summer's Retreat - Anita Holzberg

Whispering clouds
a cool pool
sun dances on the water

I walk in water
a march of the marigolds
until soothing waters
fill my soul.

Cafe Longhorn - Anita Holzberg

Across the street from Farm Stand
Cherries $1.99
I order a grilled cheese on rye
fans blowing
too hot to cook
Large tomatoes and pickles
in a salad

Memories dance at this table
We came here
You & I
A beer and steak sandwich
french fries crisp
Laughter --straight talk--comeraderie

Today,
You a distant wave
at the nursing home
Yet still, a Thank you and a Kiss.
I continue to walk the walk for you,
"Yes, I do."

4th of JULY poem - Anita

Liberty rings
4th of July swings
in a world of internet connections
I reflect on times past
lemonade stands and cherry pie
barbecued chicken and ice-tea-ed
afternoons
as the hot summer's breeze blows
free on fire and ice.
